Elizabeth Street is one my favourite places in London. It’s pretty, and full of interesting shops and good looking restaurants.
The Thomas Cubitt sits in the middle of its long stretch between Victoria and Chelsea. I suppose it’s technically Belgravia, or maybe Pimlico, and the street has adopted elements of character from all of them.
I started going to the Thomas Cubitt about 15 years ago. It was walking distance from my office, and a great place to take clients and colleagues, especially from Europe. A chance to show off traditional English fare.
The ground floor is an excellent pub, with handcrafted ales and a pleasant terrace. The upstairs is a white table cloth dining room, appropriate for a more professional lunch.
And the food has always been reliable and excellent.
When I was originally drafting my London Quick Reference Guide back in January, it was one of the first places I included.
But I realised recently, much to my shame, that I hadn’t been in about two years. It was time to get back.
I visited with a friend on Monday, so the upstairs dining room was closed. That didn’t matter, as they offered the whole menu downstairs, and it was a more comfortable spot on a warm summer day.
The atmosphere was convivial. Some tourists who had clearly done their research were at the next table, but it was mostly locals. There was a pleasant, pub buzz. The Thomas Cubitt delivered, as it always has. Much better than typical tourist pub.
Happily, the food delivered, too.
I started with a European Chopped Salad. Delicious. Crisp. Refreshing with zingy homemade dressing.
I followed with Monkfish, served with chorizo and chickpeas. This has become a fairly common dish on London menus, but this one was excellent. The monkfish was well cooked and the chorizo was spicy. Sweet onions balanced everything perfectly.
For dessert, a big chocolate thing. Fondant technically. A rich vanilla ice cream. Fantastic. My sweet tooth well and truly satiated.
I’m really pleased to have had the chance to return to The Thomas Cubitt, and really happy to continue recommending it for a Professional Lunch. It’s great food, and your choice of vibe. Want a little more professional? Book upstairs. Want a little more casual? Stick downstairs in the pub.
Either way, it’s an ideal choice.
Thanks for reading Professional Lunch. I hope you’ll share this review with friends and colleagues and subscribe if you haven’t already.
Elizabeth Street is also one of my favourite places in London. I’ve been to The Thomas Cubitt quite a bit but never upstairs. I didn’t even think about it. I’ll try to check it out next time! By the way, have you tried Ganymede? It's great for a professional lunch/dinner or drinks. I’m also quite fond of The Buttery. It’s a usual casual breakfast spot for me, but it's also pretty decent for lunch.
