I had a good experience at Kebbells in Broadstairs. The chef swapped in some completely different (and not on the menu) vegetables to accompany the fish of the day when I declared my dislike of ratatouille! He was often popping out of the kitchen to make sure everyone was enjoying their food. One tip. Don't sit at the counter if you can avoid it. You can't get your knees under properly as it's a bit too shallow.
The piece is currently linked on the front page under 'style' although you can't navigate to the 'Style' section. When you click on the link, the review is under the heading 'food'. There is a piece on noisy restaurants which appears under the 'Culture' heading but you can't navigate to the culture section. There is a food section but it's not listed anywhere. It's a nightmare!
Table 8 at Rules, the bar at El Pirata in Mayfair, any table at Zedel and I second the bar counter at Arlington.
Great suggestions! Thanks, Mick!!
That black pudding is exemplary

Great suggestion. Thanks so much! Will add it to our list for our next trip.
Yes the new Observer website does look a bit utilitarian
Chez Francis is in Brive-la-Gaillarde, not Paris. Brive has a fantastic farmers market complete with live animals.....
Yikes! Another mistake! Thanks so much for flagging. I will correct in the online version.
David Baddiel went to Mana in Manchester in their week's Observer and did a decent impersonation of a restaurant critic: https://observer.co.uk/style/food/article/mana-restaurant-review-david-baddiel
Wow. That’s bizarre. I looked really hard and never spotted that. Thanks for flagging. I’ll update the piece accordingly.

Quite a bit of work still to do, I think.

High Dive was my favourite spot on last year’s visit to Margate. A lovely and very digestible round-up, thanks!
